Bethphage's Statement on Recent Violent Unrest

Bethphage’s vision is of inclusive communities, and we are proud of our diverse workforce who work tirelessly to provide high-quality support, ensuring that people with disabilities are able to live the lives they choose.

It is therefore deeply concerning and upsetting to witness recent incidents of racist  violence and unrest in places such as Belfast and Southampton, particularly where individuals and communities have been targeted on the basis of race or background.

Our thoughts are with the victims and families affected by these distressing events. While these incidents have followed acts of violence that have understandably caused widespread concern, it is important to recognise that no community or group should be blamed for the actions of individuals.

We understand that the current climate, including heightened anti-migrant rhetoric, may feel unsettling and worrying for many people. We want to reassure our colleagues that these views come from a vocal minority and do not reflect the values of  our society as a whole. We want to reassure our colleagues that support is available, and we encourage anyone with concerns or who feels affected to reach out.

We remain committed to promoting inclusion, respect, and safety for all.

“Staff had developed close and trusting relationships and detailed care plans with the people they supported, were aware of their life histories and their expressed preferences.”
