Bethphage Responds to PM's Initial Social Care Reform Discussions

Bethphage is pleased to see social care reform has been highlighted as a priority by new Prime Minister Andy Burnham.  

Sector leaders, people who draw on social care and their families and carers have long been advocating for reform, emphasising the current system is not fit for purpose. Social Care has faced increased cuts over recent years under several political parties and leaders, leading to further struggles. These cuts have directly impacted the lives of those who draw upon support and their families, often depriving them of the support they require. A strong, well maintained social care system supports people to live as independently as possible, with dignity in their community and can work in tandem with the NHS.  

Today’s Discussion Points:  

We welcome to move to bring the Casey Review forward to 2027, recognising that we cannot wait any longer for reforms. We hope political parties engaging with the cross-party talks organised by Burnham will all come to the table wanting to create a long-term solution for a sector vital to our country.  

Support workers play an invaluable role in our communities, and we hope the Prime Minister’s recognition of this translates into the reform proposals to ensure they are fairly compensated for their work and dedication. We hope the current proposed changes to the Visa system will be part of this agenda, as many care workers will be unfairly impacted by these changes. 

While discussions of reforms are welcome, they cannot continue to overlook adults with learning disabilities, autism and mental health needs who draw on support whether in their own homes, out in the community or care homes. Any reforms must also place these individuals at the centre to ensure social care works for all.  

We will await to see the full proposals for reform and what these will mean practically. Social care no longer needs words and promises; we must see action that involves those that it will impact the most.
