Active Involvement in Action!

At Bethphage we pride ourselves on involving the people we support in the interview process whenever we can. We believe, in order to be truly person centred, the people we support must be involved in recruitment of staff.

One of the biggest adjustments for us over lockdown was in recruitment. With telephone calls and online Teams interviews replacing face-to-face interaction, we were excited to get back to interviewing candidates in person again, as soon as it was safe to do so.

In November, we were delighted to able to hold a day of interviews for potential staff with some of the people we support under careful Covid-19 considerations. The day was designed to be relaxed and engaging to help the people we support to get to know the candidates and the candidates to get to know Bethphage and the people we support. The day involved board games, use of our interactive screen and a cup of tea and a chat!

This way of interviewing is important. It allows people we support to ask questions directly to candidates, giving them ownership of their support whilst helping us match staff with individuals. It is invaluable to get feedback from people we support, who are “experts by experience.” Their insight on what makes a good support worker guides our choices in recruitment.

We hope in 2022 we will be able to safely hold more of these in-person interview days with the people we support. If it is not safe to do so, we will continue to involve them using online meetings via Teams or Zoom which has also been successful.
