Jess, who Bethphage support in Shrewsbury, established and runs Crazy Creative Dance Group with her mum, Jo. The group, set up to show what people with disabilities can do when given opportunities, gives people the chance to perform, build confidence, make friends, develop new skills and express themselves in a safe, welcoming space.
Performing has always been part of Jess’s life, inspired by her parents’ theatre company, “Able and Disabled” and that passion is now helping others shine too. After training as a dance leader during the pandemic, Jess was determined to create something of her own. In early 2025, she and Jo launched the group at The Gateway in Shrewsbury, turning that determination into a growing community opportunity.
Jess’s drive and strength of character has been key to the groups success. Even after an operation, she came straight back, performing from her wheelchair, showing resilience, persistence and commitment to the people who rely on the group each week.
What started with six members has grown to 15 regular dancers, with support workers often joining in too. As the group has grown, so has participants’ confidence, creativity and willingness to try new things.
Crazy Creative Dance Group is all about helping people grow in confidence, unleash their potential and be seen for their strengths whilst developing friendships.
A one-year anniversary performance in February celebrated the group’s talent and helped raise a fantastic £850 towards its ongoing costs its future. Most importantly, it gave dancers the chance to share their ideas, develop their talents and show exactly what they can do.
The group is delighted to recently secure sponsorship from a parent’s business, which Jo describes as a “huge relief” as it eases the pressure of finding room-hire costs and helping to fund T-shirts for members. While that support is a major boost, Jess and Jo are keen to build on the group’s success and are now looking for further backing to help it grow.
Support still needed or How you can Support Crazy Creative Dance Group
Additional support is still needed with transport for trips and outings, funding for visits to other inclusive dance groups and performances such as pioneering disabled dance group, Freefall , and volunteers who can help at sessions as the group continues to expand.
Looking ahead
Future plans and aspirations include; involvement in Shrewsbury Folk Festival, arranging day trips to watch performances by leading disabled dance groups such as Freefall in Birmingham, and offering more dance workshops to give members fresh experiences and new opportunities to develop their skills.
Jess’s creativity extends beyond dance. She also paints and writes poetry, with some of her poems being recited during some of the dance performances. Her artwork is attracting growing interest, with pieces on display in Shrewsbury, and she has now secured her first commission. Jess is also due to start a course at Shrewsbury Museum, where she will continue developing her portfolio.
