Oak Farm basks in the glory of Oakfest 2018

Saturday, 1st September 2018 will long be remembered by our colleagues and workers at Oak Farm, Ditton Priors. This was the day they held their first ever farm festival, “Oakfest” and it is accurate to say, it was a rip roaring success!

Oakfest was the brain child of Oak Farm Manager, Ceri Burgess who joined the Oak Farm team at the start of this year and she explains,

“Oakfest came about because we wanted to build on the success of the popular Oak Farm Dog Show but take it to another level by trying something a little bit special. Through lots of discussions  we came up with Oakfest which we all got really excited about and the idea just grew and grew. Planning and organising Oakfest became our main project of the summer, something we as a staff team, the workers and the community could all get behind and work on together.”

The weather was kind to us on the day which meant that everyone got to fully enjoy everything on offer which included:

  • fun dog show
  • helicopter
  • fresh farm produce for sale as well as Oak Farm’s award winning jams and chutneys
  • belly dancing
  • silent auction stall – with some great prizes to be won donated by local businesses
  • Shropshire Wildlife Trust
  • Severn Hospice and Severn Hospice Crafts
  • Armoured combat vehicle – tank
  • live music
  • live owl display
  • Guinea pig handling
  • food and drink including vegan café, mocha moo café amongst others

Ceri reflected on the day,

“I think the day was a great success, all of us here at Oak Farm really enjoyed it. We received some lovely feedback from those who came saying they thought there was lots of variety and it was great fun for all ages. We couldn’t have asked for nicer weather and it was great to see so many people bringing their dogs to take part in the dog show. A big thank you to all who came and supported us, people who donated their time to help on the day and any businesses that gave us donations, we are very grateful of your support. We hope to see you again next year!”

Oakfest was planned and organised by the staff and workers at Oak Farm because they wanted to celebrate of all the fantastic achievements of the Oak Farm Workers  and show what amazing things adults with learning disabilities are capable of when given the same opportunities to develop and use their talents as everyone else. I think we can all agree, they certainly achieved that. Well done to everyone at Oak Farm and we are already looking forward to Oakfest 2019!
