Bethphage is pleased to see social care reform has been highlighted as a priority\u00a0by\u00a0new Prime Minister Andy Burnham.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sector leaders, people who draw on social care and their families\u00a0and carers\u00a0have long been advocating for reform,\u00a0emphasising the current system is not fit for purpose.\u00a0Social Care has faced increased cuts over recent\u00a0years under several political parties and leaders, leading to further struggles.\u00a0These\u00a0cuts have\u00a0directly\u00a0impacted\u00a0the lives of those who\u00a0draw upon\u00a0support and their families, often depriving them of the support they require.\u00a0A strong, well\u00a0maintained\u00a0social care system\u00a0supports people to live\u00a0as\u00a0independently\u00a0as possible, with dignity\u00a0in their community\u00a0and\u00a0can work in tandem with the NHS.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Today’s Discussion Points:\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

We welcome to move to\u00a0<\/span>bring the Casey Review forward to 2027<\/span><\/b>,\u00a0recognising that we cannot wait any longer for reforms.\u00a0We hope political parties engaging with the\u00a0<\/span>cross-party\u00a0talks\u00a0<\/span><\/b>organised by Burnham will all come to the table wanting to create a long-term solution for a sector vital to our country.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Support workers play an invaluable role<\/span><\/b>\u00a0in our communities, and we hope the Prime Minister’s recognition of this translates into the reform proposals to ensure\u00a0they are fairly compensated for their work and dedication.\u00a0We hope the current\u00a0<\/span>proposed changes to the Visa system<\/span><\/b>\u00a0will be part of this agenda, as\u00a0many care workers will be unfairly\u00a0impacted by these changes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

While discussions of reforms are welcome, they cannot continue to overlook adults with learning disabilities, autism and mental health needs who draw on support\u00a0whether in their own homes, out in the community or care homes.\u00a0Any reforms must also place these individuals at the centre to ensure social care works for all.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We will await to see the full proposals for reform and what these will\u00a0mean practically. Social care no longer needs words and promises;\u00a0we must see action that involves those that it will\u00a0impact\u00a0the most.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
