We held our staff conference on 13 May, at Meeting Point House, Telford. This is our opportunity to get together, relax and learn, as well as celebrate our successes over the course of 2014-15.
It was also an opportunity to remember and pay tribute to those from Bethphage who passed away, with a minute’s applause. Two people we supported, David White and Clive Taylor, sadly died as did a member of staff Di White. They are missed.
Our learning theme for the day was how to communicate effectively. We heard two presentations. The first was from Jacqui and Sarah, from the Speech and Language Team (South Staffordshire and Shropshire Healthcare Trust). They discussed a variety of communication methods. The second was from Janet Gurney, ‘Us in a Bus’, who spoke about ‘intensive interaction’, an insightful and successful approach to engaging with people who have autism. This drew upon the work of Phoebe Caldwell.
We then saw the Q-Team’s video on how to communicate…or not! Here’s the link, it’s funny but thought-provoking as well.
Finally there were the staff awards. We received several nominations for each of the categories. Following really tough deliberations, Sharon Evans was awarded our Employee of the Year Award, Mandy Lees, our Manager of the Year Award, and Bradbury Lodge were our Team of the Year. Several other presentations were made to staff who had completed training over the course of 2014-15.
